CheChe23's NBA Power Rankings (Mar. 26, 2008)

During the madness of the NCAA tournament, the NBA starts to brew it's own form of madness. The playoffs usually begin to take form and seedings begin to lock up. This year there will likely be many playoff unknowns heading into the final day of NBA action. The playoff positions change with every game, but my rankings are a weekly thing that change just as much and this week is no different. New Orleans makes the giant leap from seventh to first and after a season of doubting the Sixers and Warriors -- I've moved them both into the top 10. Here are my rankings for the last week in March, comments are always appreciated.

BIGGEST RISE: New Orleans from 7th to 1st.
BIGGEST FALL: Houston Rockets from 3rd to 7th.

CheChe23's Power Rankings: March 26, 2008
TEAM RK (LW) W-L COMMENT
1 (7) 48-21 I know it's drastic moving the Hornets from seventh to first, but how can you argue what they accomplish as a team. Led by Chris Paul, the Hornets have a roster surrounding the leader which contains quality and depth -- enough to win an NBA title. To prove they can win it all, New Orleans will have to show they can compete in consecutive nights on the road. Starting with the win over the Hawks last night, the Hornets play five more road games over the next eight days.
2 (1) 55-15 Boston has dropped the last two games, including a head-to-head loss to New Orleans -- which allowed me to move NO up ahead of Boston. Boston will get it's chance at revenge when they play a re-match against New Orleans on Friday (this time in Boston). Crazy stat: Boston is 7-2 sans Garnett and 6-1 sans Allen.
3 (2) 50-20 Another reason why New Orleans surfaced to the top spot is because Detroit lost two of three this past week. It's hard to ignore the quality of basketball that the Pistons play every night. The Pistons are ranked at the top of the NBA in point differential (2nd), average ppg allowed (2nd), assists (7th), protecting the ball (1st) and blocks (4th).
4 (5) 47-25 Golden State almost did Los Angeles in for two in a row on back-to-back nights, but a botched call in OT allowed the Lakers to hold on. As tight as the West has been, a win is a win and I'm sure a banged up Lakers squad will take it. They find relief in the schedule this week with Charlotte tonight and Memphis on Friday.
5 (4) 45-21 Utah lost to the Lakers on Thursday ending the Jazz forever-ending winning streak at home and also forfeiting their fourth spot to L.A. at the same time. For the Jazz, the Northwest division is looking like a lock and now Utah will start to focus in playing either Phoenix or San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs -- what a treat it is to be the fourth seed in the West.
6 (6) 47-23 The Suns are ranked third for the third straight week. No reason to move the Suns down now, especially now that Shaq is becoming familiar with the routine that they have in Phoenix. The Suns lead the NBA in assists per game (26.7) and score the leagues second most points per game.
7 (3) 48-23 Houston drops from third to seventh this week after going 2-3 since the winning streak. A mid-day Spurs vs Rockets game on Sunday isn't the Elite Eight, but it could be a match-up version of the NBA's Elite Eight.
8 (8) 48-23 It's hard to move the Spurs anywhere with the way the rest of the NBA stacks up. But after losing four straight, San Antonio has quickly regained their momentum with four straight victories. San Antonio ranks eighth, however they still make for the best bet to go to the NBA finals.
9 (11) 45-24 The Warriors got screwed on Monday when the refs blew the Laker game by calling a foul on Monta Ellis when it really should have been a no-call. Speaking of Ellis, are you kidding me? Ellis, so HOT right now, Ellis. I like what I see from the Warriors, but with Denver hot on their heels there is no room for error.
10 (13) 36-35 I watched the Boston vs Philadelphia game on Monday and fell more in love with players that I've been following on both sides. For the Celtics it was Leon Powe and for the Sixers it was Louis Williams. Williams has averaged 11.1 points per game this season and has been a big reason for the Sixers success. After watching Philly outlast Boston, I get the feeling the 76ers will be looking to make a statement when they get into the post-season -- look out Cleveland.

OUTSIDE THE TOP 10:

11. Dallas Mavericks (45-26): The Dirk-less Mavericks beat the Clippers last night -- well of course they did, Los Angeles is under .500.
12. Orlando Magic (46-27): The Magic beat up on Philadelphia on Friday, but sandwiched that win with a loss to Washington and a loss to Atlanta. After a ten point loss to San Antonio last night, Orlando drops out of the top ten.
13. Denver Nuggets (43-28): Denver has won its last three straight games -- and they needed to. The Nuggets face Dallas, Golden State and Phoenix to finish March.
14. Cleveland Cavaliers (40-31): The Cavs aren't very good, but luckily LeBron James is. Cleveland faces three playoff teams over the next three games including a match-up with the Sixers in what could be an opening round playoffs series.
15. Portland Trail Blazers (38-34): Portland swept a back-to-back with the Los Angeles Clippers before falling to Seattle on Monday. LaMarcus Aldridge sprained his ankle and had to leave early scoring only 10 points, ending a string of nine straight games of scoring 20 points or more.
16. Toronto Raptors (35-35): Who do you think is better: Toronto or Portland? It wasn't tough to pick after the Raptors lost to the Cavs on Friday and the Nugs on Sunday. These two teams are as equal as they come, but I side with Portland this week.
17. Washington Wizards (36-34): Gilbert Arenas will be back, soon. "It feels like they are playing games with my mind," said Arenas, who should be back during the first week of April.
18. Atlanta Hawks (30-40): Atlanta is doing its best job of trying to miss the post season by losing gammes to New Jersey last Wednesday and Chicago last night. This week could be a good time for Atlanta to solidify that eighth and final spot with consecutive games against bottom-feeders Milwaukee, Chicago, New York and Memphis.
19. Sacramento Kings (31-39): Sacramento doesn't play defense. In the last 37 games, they have allowed 100-plus points 31 times.
20. Chicago Bulls (27-40): The Bulls playoff hope almost shattered with a late game collapse to the Pacers on Saturday. But with a win over Atlanta on Tuesday and Philadelphia, Atlanta (again) and Milwaukee on the schedule has me holding on to that last shred of hope.
21. New Jersey Nets (30-41): New Jersey plays two games this week against Indiana which will indirectly be a playoff series.
22. Indiana Pacers (29-42): Indiana is making a late push for the playoffs with four wins in the last five games.
23. Charlotte Bobcats (25-45): Charlotte has lost six of their last seven games.
24. Minnesota Timberwolves (18-51): Minnesota has won four of the last six games and are 6-6 in the month of March.
25. Los Angeles Clippers (21-49): Eight straight losses for the Clippers.
26. Milwaukee Bucks (24-45): Milwaukee has dropped seven of their last eight games.
27. Seattle Sonics (17-54): Seattle beat Portland on Monday for their second win this month. Maybe Kevin Durant would like the be on the Texas sweet 16 squad right now.
28. Memphis Grizzlies (18-52): When the Grizzlies won two in a row last week I couldn't believe it -- how many wins are left in that tank?
29. New York Knicks (19-51): New York is 1-11 this month.
30. Miami Heat (13-57): The only win that the Knicks have in March is to Miami.

HOT HOT HOT

1. Andre Iguodala -- The Sixers have been led by the other AI. In back-to-back wins, Iguodala has posted back-to-back 28 point games. Iguodala is averaging a miniature version of a LeBron James stat-line this past month: 21.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.4 apg.
2. Monta Ellis -- Monta Ellis has played almost as good as Conan O'Brian's :51 second ring spin. The 23-year-old Ellis was picked 10th in the 2nd round -- makes me wonder what NBA GM's even look at as drafting credentials. I thought Ellis played great last year, but he's outdone himself this season. The Warriors wouldn't be close to the playoff picture if it weren't for this guy. Rebounds, assists, steals, speed, hustle and points. This past month Ellis is averaging 22.4 ppg and 6.1 rebounds, he averaged 26.0 ppg in February.
3. Joel Przybilla -- After 17 rebounds last night there was no way I could ignore what the Minnesota native Przybilla has done on the glass recently. He recorded a career best 25 rebounds Saturday. This month Joel has averaged 10.8 rebounds per game, he's averaging 8.1 on the season.

NOT NOT NOT

1. Jason Kidd -- Kidd hasn't exactly shown he was worth all the trouble. He hasn't topped double digits in assists since March 14 and hasn't scored more than 10 in nine games. I realize that Kidd isn't a scorer, but what is ruining the Mavericks is his shooting percentage. This past month Kidd has shot just 7.5 attempts per game, but he's only making 2.6. Jason Kidd is averaging just 8.6 assists per game in March, WHAT -- UNDER 10.0??!
2. Smush Parker -- Every game Smush Parker has played, all six, the Clippers have lost. He is trying to replace Sam Cassell, but after sitting out nearly all of the season (some saying he'd NEVER come back) Parker has averaged 6.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game since returning.
3. Ike Diogu -- I picked Diogu even though he's really never been HOT because I noticed that he was drafted in the same draft as Monta Ellis (HOT) and selected in the same slot as Andre Iguodala (9th overall, HOT). Diogu had high hopes for NBA success after playing well enough in his senior season at Arizona State to get selected top 10, but this season hasn't proven Digou should be compared with Iguodala.

PGA Preview: Zurich Classic of New Orleans (3/25/08)

Tiger Woods isn't entered in the Zurich Classic, his next start will be in two weeks at The Masters. Woods is likely to play in twelve more events before the season ends giving him an opportunity to not only move past Ben Hogan for third all-time on the victories list, but surpass Jack Nicklaus for second. Woods should be the PGA Tour's all-time victory leader (passing Sam Snead's 82) by the end of 2010.

Last week, Geoff Ogilvy won the WGC-CA Championships, but neither Ogilvy nor Woods are entered into the upcoming weekend's event. According the the list of past winners, having a big names doesn't automatically equal success. The last three winners have been Nick Watney (E), Chris Couch (NE) and Tim Petrovic (E).

Even though you should be watching the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, here are my players to consider and players to avoid for the golf tournament.

Players to Consider :

1. Jim Furyk -- Furyk will be the odds on favorite to win this weekend. It's about time for Furyk to come away with a trophy and the field is parting for him. With no Woods, Mickelson, Scott, Singh, Sabbatini or Choi... just to name a few -- Furyk will capitalize on some easy FedExCup points.

2. Zach Johnson -- Consistent and clean, Johnson has been perfect on his attempts to make the cut (6/6) in 2008. Johnson posted his best set of four rounds last weekend on the way to a top ten finish (T9th). Look for Johnson to ride some WGC-CA Championship momentum and turn the Zurich Classic into Zach's Classic.

3. Stewart Cink -- Cink has played great his season and will benefit from having a weak field at the Zurich Classic. Cink has already captured two second place finishes and one third place finish to rank fifth on the FedExCup points standings.

4. Steve Marino -- Why haven't you missed a cut yet, Steve? How are you averaging 69.30 per round, Steve?! When will you win, STEVE?!! (Anyone getting the Ace Ventura reference?)

5. Matt Kuchar -- Ignore Kuchar's play during the minor-league event last weekend (MC at the Puerto Rico Open was his first of the year). Kuchar's three top 25 finishes this season have me watching what Ashton's brother can do.

Players to Avoid :

1. Steve Lowery -- After winning at the AT&T Pebble Beach in early February, Lowery has since posted two MC's and a 70th. There are plenty of better golfers with the first name Steve, Lowery just shouldn't be your choice for last name.

2. Jonathan Byrd -- Since the nice cinderella-like run that Byrd made in the WGC tournament, he has played more like the 16 seed he started as. Byrd hasn't shot under 70 in seven rounds of golf and his poor play will likely continue this weekend at the TPC of Louisiana.

3. Kevin Na -- I thought that Na was on his way to a great season with two fourth places finishes in his first four events. But after Na's last two events (MC, WD), I'm not sure what to expect, which is why I'm avoiding.

4. David Toms -- Toms has entered his last two events and has played his way out of them (MC 12 over par, MC nine over par). You can avoid Toms until his game is back together -- right now he's struggling.

5. Rocco Mediate -- I recall that in year's past when you saw Rocco Mediate on the leaderboard that he'd be somewhere near the contenders. Recently, Rocco hasn't even put his name on the board. Three MC's in his last three events and nothing better than 72nd all season. There is no reason to trust Mediate.

CheChe23's NBA Power Rankings (Mar. 19, 2008)

Everyone is focused on the NCAA basketball tournament this week, but don't forget about the NBA. The Boston Celtics have officially cemented themselves as the best team in the league. Monday they beat the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. Last night they dismantled Houston, ending their 22 game win streak. They own the best record in the NBA and you can't say that Garnett is "tanking it" this season as he has played his way into MVP discussions. Are you surprised? Boston ranks first in this weeks version of "CheChe23's Power Rankings".

BIGGEST RISE: Philadelphia 76ers from 16th to 13th.
BIGGEST FALL: San Antonio from 3rd to 8th.

(Editor's note: "LW" indicates each team's ranking from CheChe23's previous week. —DC)

CheChe23's Power Rankings: March 19, 2008
TEAM RK (LW) W-L COMMENT
1 (1) 54-13 It didn't take long for Sam Cassell to get a chance to show he still has big... confidence. Sam "I Am" had 17 points Monday helping the Celtics get past the Spurs when he splashed a long ball to put Boston ahead 89-87 with just 46 seconds left. It appears that Cassell is just as motivated as the rest of the Celtics -- what a perfect storm for a title run.
2 (5) 48-18 Detroit has won 10 of their last 13 games and move from fifth to second this week. After the beat down they handed to New Orleans on Sunday which was following a win over San Antonio, Detroit looked great crushing Denver last night. If you are looking for some basketball to tide you over before the NCAA's -- a re-match of last year's Eastern Conference Finals is tonight at 8:00 ET on ESPN.
3 (4) 46-21 Houston wins by having role players who can star on different nights. They win because they play great defense, shoot high percentages and protect the basketball on a nightly basis. On paper the Rockets are looking great, but now that the streak is over -- will they continue to have the same swagger? Houston is 31-5 since the first of the year.
4 (8) 45-24 If Utah wants to be seen as a serious threat to remain at the top in the Western Conference they can't lose to Eastern Conference wimps like Chicago and New Jersey. Other than a few hiccups, the Jazz have played fearless this month. And you aren't going to hear about it either, they are rated by their peers as the least-talkative team in the NBA. Utah has won 19 in a row at home.
5 (2) 45-21 Even though the Lakers snuck past the Mavericks last night, a loss to the Rockets and Hornets this past week has them moving down in the power rankings. Plus, L.A. won't have Andy Bynum until the post-season which leads me to believe that chemistry issues will hold back the Lakers this year. But that doesn't mean Kobe won't be the MVP.
6 (6) 44-22 The Suns have started to find their stride with The Big Aristotle. Shaq had one of his best games as a member of the Suns on Saturday when he went 6/6 from the floor, scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. As much desire as Garnett and Company have in Boston to win a title, don't underestimate Steve Nash's passion to capture a championship ring.
7 (7) 45-21 Chris Paul has played well enough to win the MVP, but even though he won't get the honor since Kobe is next in line, he's ready to contend for the league's most valuable for years to come. Some of the plays that Paul makes have me comparing him to a combination of Isiah Thomas and Jason Kidd. A good sign for the Hornet bench, Bonzi Wells had his best game since becoming a Hornet when he put up 19 points and four rebounds on Monday.
8 (3) 43-23 Tuesday and Wednesday this week are the only days in March that the Spurs go consecutive days without having at least one game. After losing their last four and six of seven, maybe the day off will get the Spurs back on track. As we all know, a losing streak can be devestating in the tight Western Conference race.
9 (11) 45-24 Orlando has won 11 of their last 13 including the last five straight. With three winnable games in a row before facing San Antonio next Tuesday -- Orlando could keep moving on up and moving on in to the minds of Boston and Detroit.
10 (9) 44-24 The Mavericks/Lakers game epitomizes the NBA for many reasons. First because of the fact that Los Angeles was killing Dallas in the first half. Second because the Mavericks tore back in the second half, but still fell short by two. Third because if the Mavs had won they might be ranked as high as fifth overall, but because they lost -- it's 10th this week. Another reason you have to drop Dallas is because they have yet to beat a team with a winning record since Jason Kidd arrived.

OUTSIDE THE TOP 10:

11. Golden State (41-25): The Warriors face a brutal end of the schedule this month. They will have a chance to really put themselves in the driver seat for the last playoff spot in the West if they can come away a winner against Denver a week from Saturday. I don't trust their style, too much reliance on guard play and the three point shot and not enough focus on defense. In other words, this eight seed shouldn't expect to make another magical run past round one again this year.
12. Cleveland Cavaliers (37-27): The Cavs might need James to score 29 of the team's final 30 points in order to beat Detroit tonight like he did in game five of the Eastern conference finals last year.
13. Philadelphia 76ers (33-34): This baffles me. The Sixers beat the Pistons, Bulls and Spurs this week. Much respect.
14. Denver Nuggets (40-27): It's starting to hit me. The Nuggets won't be a playoff team this year. I'm sorry for boldly predicting them to win the title, but they (and I) have excuses. This could be a realization for AI that he might need to become a pass-first point guard in this offense.
15. Portland Trail Blazers (35-33): Portland practiced with Greg Oden this past week. It's nice to hear the name Greg Oden again. The Buckeyes were so fun to watch last year -- remember that block Oden made against Tennessee in the sweet 16? Or how about that Xaiver game!?
16. Toronto Raptors (34-29): Toronto has now lost 11 of their last 13 games. Injury issues and chemistry concerns are weighing heavily on what could be a great team. Sam Mitchell will have them ready come playoff time, but its been rough this month -- maybe getting Chris Bosh back will help.
17. Sacramento Kings (31-36): Kevin Martin took apart the Warriors last night and the Kings keep playing spoiler. Ron Artest had another good game and continues to play HOT.
18. Washington Wizards (33-33): What's up with Gilbert Arenas? Who cares, his Wildcats need to pull some serious upsets if they want to even make it out of the first round. Caron Butler's Huskies have a better shot at getting past the sweet 16. But Brendan Haywood and Antawn Jamison's Tar Heels might be the best bet to make it to the Final Four out of the alma-mater's on the Wizard roster. I wonder if Nick Young wishes he had stay another year at USC? Doubt it.
19. Atlanta Hawks (29-38): Atlanta hasn't played great going 4-6 in the last 10 games, but they remain a half game ahead of the Nets for the final spot in the playoffs.
20. Chicago Bulls (27-40): The Bulls blew an 18-point fourth-quarter lead to Philly on Friday and fell apart against New Orleans on Monday down the stretch. If Chicago is serious about saving face this season they have to play with intensity for all 48 minutes every game.
21. New Jersey Nets (28-39): New Jersey lost to Chicago last night after Devin Harris looked like he salvaging the season and making a playoff push by beating Cleveland and Utah. Harris is finding is groove and might be the key to success for New Jersey.
22. Indiana Pacers (26-41): Indiana could actually attempt to make a playoff run if they can win against Charlotte, Minnesota, Chicago, New Jersey, New Jersey again and Miami the rest of this month. Six wins is enough to put the Pacers on pace for playoffs heading into the NBA's final month.
23. Charlotte Bobcats (24-43): March: Five wins, four losses. I'm sick of trying to figure out the Bobcats.
24. Milwaukee Bucks (23-44): Milwaukee is putting together a nice run at the lottery by winning just one game in the month of March (1-7).
25. Minnesota Timberwolves (16-50): You have to put the Wolves ahead of the Clippers and Sonics. Minnesota beat Los Angeles on Monday (and the previous Saturday) and Seattle on Friday.
26. Los Angeles Clippers (21-45): Four losses in a row and the next win on the schedule doesn't come until the 29th against Memphis.
27. Seattle Sonics (16-51): Since a win on the first of the month, Seattle has dropped eight straight.
28. New York Knicks (19-48): New York has one win this month, but with Memphis, Minnesota, New Jersey and Miami coming up -- they might just get another win.
29. Memphis Grizzlies (15-50): Another win on Monday is another surprise to me. Minnesota vs Memphis tonight is one of those games that the NBA will monitor closely to make sure that neither side tries to "tank" it to add to their lottery odds.
30. Miami Heat (12-54): The Heat won their first game of the month last night, I wonder how many people were at the Bradley Center to witness?

HOT HOT HOT

1. Devin Harris -- Harris really didn't help make a case for the HOT list last night scoring just four points and equaling the number of assists he had with turnovers (3). But on Saturday, Harris pulled his best Jason Kidd impression missing a triple-double by two rebounds (19 points, 12 assists, 8 rebounds) and it is clear that as goes Harris, so goes the Nets.
2. Ron Artest -- Artest has quietly gone about his business these past six weeks, maybe making a case that he's worth the risk for a title contender shopping this summer. Artest has helped the Kings on both ends of the floor and has been especially effective on the offensive side of the ball ever since Bibby left. Artest has scored over 20 in three of his last four including 26 points in last night's win.
3. Erick Dampier -- You might not think six points and nine rebounds could be good enough for the HOT list, but Dampier makes the list for the small things. Like efficent shot selection, Dampier has shot incredibly well this month (70.6%). The Mavs have other problems though.

NOT NOT NOT

1. Steven Jackson -- Once considered a candidate for MVP, Jackson has fallen off recently. Last night the Warriors got nine points from Jackson on 3/15 shooting (0/4 from three). His last three games Jackson has shot 3/17 from beyond the arc.
2. T. J. Ford -- Ford is a point guard who I expect can average 10 assists a game. His games of scoring 23, 28 this month are also what are expected. His last three games, Ford has put up 5, 7 and 7 -- under expectations. Also, did anyone catch the tirade Ford displayed on his way to getting ejected on Monday?
3. Andres Nocioni -- After averaging nearly 14 points per game on the season, Nocioni has been cut back this past month averaging just 7.6 ppg. His rebounds are also suffering with Drew Gooden cleaning up the glass. Nocioni was averaging nearly six rebounds a game in November and he is averaging just 2.4 rpg this month.

CheChe23's NBA Power Rankings (Mar. 12, 2008)

I'm starting to accept that the Rockets will make the playoffs and I've moved them up accordingly. The product is producing outstanding numbers as a team and they have role players doing whatever it takes to get the win. But without Yao Ming?! I mean, Tracy McGrady is quickly putting his name back in the same breath as Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan. But Duncan has Ginobili/Parker and Kobe has Gasol/Odom while McGrady has Shane Battier/Rafer Alston. So, even with the third longest win streak in NBA history (and counting...), I'm not betting the Rockets will be the NBA champion. I'm still sold on Boston, Los Angeles and San Antonio. Check out my power rankings for this week and as always feel free to leave a comment.

BIGGEST RISE: Houston Rockets from 11th to 4th.
BIGGEST FALL: Orlando Magic from 6th to 11th.

CheChe23's Power Rankings: March 12, 2008
TEAM RK (LW) W-L COMMENT
1 (3) 50-12 Boston gets my nod over the Spurs and Lakers as the No. 1 team because they are outscoring opponents by a league best 10.4 per game. Does that mean the Celtics might not know how to win in tight games? Maybe. Boston is 7-6 in games decided by five points or less.
2 (1) 44-19 Kobe couldn't convert on an 18-foot jumper Sunday afternoon and the Lakers lost to the Kings 114-113. The Lakers might run into a defensive problem in the post season (LA gives up 100.7 ppg), but what's good about the Lakers is that they are third in the NBA in point differential (LA outscores opponents by 7.5 ppg). Los Angeles is 15-3 with Pau Gasol.
3 (2) 44-19 I'm looking forward to the NBA championship preview we get to see next Monday. Both San Antonio and Boston have the best odds of getting to the title game and Monday's showdown will provide a glimpse of what KG will need to overcome in order to capture his first ring and what Duncan will need to do to prevent that from happening.
4 (11) 43-20 Houston this, Houston that. I'm not sure if anyone really thinks Houston is as good as they have played, I certainly don't. And I'm especially sick of talking about Houston's season stats defining the team that is on the floor right now (Yao Ming was the reason this team ranks second in the league in rebounding per game). I'll be waiting for next week when the Rockets play some real teams (LAL on Sunday, BOS on Tuesday, NO Wednesday, GS Friday and PHO Saturday).
5 (4) 46-17 Detroit is statistically solid (second in the NBA in point differential) and is getting solid contribution from its bench -- Jarvis Hayes, Rodney Stuckey, Jason Maxiell and even Amir Johnson. Johnson was a second round pick in '05 out of High School (the very last HS player ever selected and ever will be selected) and played just 11 games in his first two season. His first basket came on a windmill dunk. Johnson has played 44 games this season and has already played 20+ minutes in three games this month (He's appear all but one game since Jan. 23).
6 (7) 42-22 The Suns scorched the Grizzlies last night and looked close to a team for the first time. Granted the blow-out win was against the NBA's basement dweller Memphis, but seeing them gel is a good sign for Phoenix fans. Shaq is starting to get comfortable with his role and Nash is appreciating the pace (he's not young, either).
7 (9) 43-20 New Orleans has San Antonio tonight, Los Angeles Friday and Detroit on Sunday. I'd like to see how the Hornets come out of this stretch of games because it will define their grit and heart and show what we should expect when they are playing in June.
8 (5) 42-22 If Utah can just get through this week (three games on the road) they finish the rest of the month playing at home. Utah has won the last 18 games in Energy Solutions Arena.
9 (7) 40-20 Dallas should get back on track this week with games against Charlotte, Indiana and Miami. After losing three in a row against playoff foes, it isn't long before the Mavericks have to face three playoff teams in a row again (Mar. 18 vs LAL, Mar. 20 vs BOS, Mar. 23 vs SA).
10 (12) 39-23 This spot (10th) has turned out to be the spot for the "best of the lousiest, the lousiest of the best" and this week's honor goes to Golden State. The Warriors beat Orlando on Saturday which gives them the edge in the rankings this week. A tough back-to-back home vs Toronto and at Phoenix will test Golden State who is lining up for the eighth playoff seed for the second year in a row. The next two weeks are huge and will determine their playoff fate.

OUTSIDE THE TOP 10:

11. Orlando Magic (41-21): Orlando has won seven of the past nine and would be the third seed in the playoffs if they started today. The Magic Big Three could argue they aren't getting the respect they deserve. Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis average 59.9 ppg, 25.8 rpg and 8.6 apg, shooting 50.1% combined. I can't decide who could be the bigger giant killer in the playoffs, Cleveland or Orlando?
12. Cleveland Cavaliers (37-27): The Cavs match up against the Magic on Monday in the battle for which team will make the best giant killer. In what could be a good thing for Delonte West, Eric Snow is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.
13. Denver Nuggets (35-24): Allen Iverson has a small fracture in his finger. Maybe that's why the Nuggets won't make the playoffs. The entire team can't wait for the offseason so they can add more ink. Denver has to be the most tattooed team in the NBA.
14. Toronto Raptors (34-29): A Raptor/Nugget showdown in Denver on Friday will settle the East/West ranking discrepancy. The Raptors schedule doesn't get any easier coming up and they've lost five of their last seven. But as far as this team could drop, they'll still be the fifth seed come playoff time.
15. Portland Trail Blazers (34-31): Portland's record would put them one game back of the fifth spot if they were in the East.
16. Philadelphia 76ers (30-34): This playoff wannabe team has a roster with five players averaging double digits in scoring per game. There is no chance the Sixers get out of the first round if they end up getting into the playoffs, but a recent push has them comfortably in seventh.
17. Sacramento Kings (28-35): This past week the Kings lost to the Clippers and Timberwolves but beat the Lakers. A classic case of playing unmotivated basketball.
18. Atlanta Hawks (26-37): The Hawks have lost five out of six this month but believe it or not still remain a playoff team if the post season started today -- crazy East.
19. Washington Wizards (31-32): The latest injury in Washington could put Antawn Jamison on the pine with the other two Wizard stars. Luckily for the Washington they are getting great production for bench studs Andray Blatche and rookie Nick Young.
20. Chicago Bulls (26-38): By beating the Jazz last night the Bulls have officially made their push into the playoff picture. A few more wins and they'll lock up the eighth spot and end that discussion. Drew Gooden is playing out of his mind, he looks like Rodman.
21. New Jersey Nets (26-38): The next three games could make or break the Nets playoff hopes. With the Bulls and Hawks making a solid push for that eighth and final spot, the Nets have made a move in the wrong direction losing six in a row.
22. Indiana Pacers (25-39): After dropping three in a row, Indiana got the best of Seattle last night. If the Pacers want to make a playoff push, it's now or never. One problem is that they need to get Jermaine O'Neal and Jamaal Tinsley to think it's worth going to the playoffs.
23. Milwaukee Bucks (23-41): Even with 41 losses, the Bucks playoff hopes are still alive. Michael Redd could up his points per game to over 25.0 if he could connect on a couple more from long range. With just six wins on the road, the Bucks enjoy 10 of their last 14 games this season at the Bradley Center.
24. Charlotte Bobcats (24-39): In a race for the eighth spot and a chance to meet Boston in round one of the playoffs, Charlotte might have a full head of steam. After dropping five in a row the Bobcats have won five in a row.
25. Los Angeles Clippers (21-41): Al Thornton has been a pleasant surprise as the 14th overall pick. The forward from Florida State has averaged 11.8 points per game and 4.2 rebounds this season. Thornton has scored 20+ in three games this month, scoring 18 in one other game.
26. Seattle Sonics (16-48): Since opening the month with a win over Minnesota, Seattle has managed to lose five in a row and faces Boston tonight.
27. New York Knicks (18-46): New York is terrible. It doesn't even matter what they do the rest of the year.
28. Minnesota Timberwolves (14-48): Wow, two wins in a row? I was getting nervous that "we" are trying to give away ping pong balls. Or should I say giving up "Beasley Balls". No, I shouldn't say that.
29. Memphis Grizzlies (15-47): A win against New Jersey allowed Memphis to get their first win in nine games. Another losing streak has begun with losses to Boston and Phoenix and an upcoming trip to Denver and Golden State could add on.
30. Miami Heat (11-51): Wade's season has come to an end last week, although Miami's season ended in November.

HOT HOT HOT

1. LeBron James -- James pushed his points per game average to over 30.0 with a 50 point game last week and 30+ in five of his last six. On Monday, James recorded his 17th career triple-double, seventh of the season. James is averaging 36.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.5 assists in his last six games.
2. Mehmet Okur -- The Jazz big man with the Dirk-style touch from deep recorded 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds last night. Okur is going off this month, he's been on fire. In March, Okur is averaging 20.8 points, 11.8 rebounds, shooting 58% from the field and 55% from three.
3. Craig Smith -- Last night, Craig Smith was 7/9 had 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Smith has been coming up large for the Wolves lately. Smith's numbers in March are 14.0 ppg and 4.0 rebounds but what's outstanding is he's shooting 71.1% from the floor.

NOT NOT NOT

1. Dwyane Wade -- Out for the season, Wade's Heat are in shambles. I don't even think that landing the No. 1 overall pick could help the Heat with an unhealthy Wade. Hopefully his knee surgery is successful and he'll be back next year to start a fresh run with Marion as his Pippen. Wade has a lot of work to do if he wants to get another ring.
2. Jason Terry -- If Jason Terry would play more like Jason Kidd, the Mavericks would win more games. Last season, Terry was unselfish and embraced the role as sixth man with more pride. This season, Terry has yet to eclipse double digits in assists and not only that he doesn't get to the rim like Devin Harris. If the Mavs can find a way to get Terry more involved as a sixth man, they'll find a better rhythm for the offense.
3. Juan Carlos Navarro -- Memphis recently demoted Navarro from the starting role because he hasn't taken advantage of his playing time. After a 17 point, 5 assist output on the first of the month, Navarro has been cold ever since. Last night, Navarro scored five points and had only two assists and the game before he had just three points and two assists.

NCAA Teams With "NBA Talent" = Tourney Success (3/11/08)

There is plenty of insight and advice surrounding the NCAA basketball tournament. Last year I put together a list of potential title contenders based on having future NBA athletes on their roster. I did some research and have discovered the importance of having future NBAers is significant. It is obvious with the last three title teams.

In 2005, title winner North Carolina had four first round draft picks (May, McCants, Williams, Felton). The Tar Heels beat Illinois who had Deron Williams and Luther Head - both enjoying NBA success. 2006 and 2007 champion, Florida, had three top 10 picks (Noah, Horford, Brewer). And last year they beat a team with Greg Oden and Mike Conley who were both picked in the top five. Here is the list of title contending teams with future NBA players currently playing on their rosters.

1. Memphis -- Memphis is this year's version of '06 Florida or '05's UNC. Derrick Rose is projected to go right behind Beasley as No. 2 overall in next year's draft with teammates Chris Douglas-Roberts and Joey Dorsey also eyeing the first round. Not to mention that John Calipari spent four years in the pro's as a head coach for the Nets and as an assistant for the 76ers.

2. North Carolina -- The Tar Heels haven't been able to show their professional potential due to some nagging injuries and a tough schedule, but Roy Williams has certainly recruited next level talent. In what is shaping up to be a title-team, guard Ty Lawson and forward Tyler Hansbrough are both projected as first round picks in June. Wayne Ellington, Will Graves, Marcus Ginyard and Danny Green also have hope of someday making it to the NBA.

3. Kansas -- Just a year ago the Jayhawks ranked fourth on my list of teams with future pro's looking for tourney success thanks to top 10 pick Julian Wright. Kansas is back in the hunt again this year thanks to a few pro's who decided to stick around. Sophomore power forward Darrell Arthur, senior power forward Darnell Jackson and junior shooting guard Brandon Rush are all projected to be drafted as part of the '08 draft class. While junior point guard Mario Chalmers could make a nice first round pick in '09.

4. UCLA -- Kevin Love might be the sexy pick, but UCLA has plenty of other players who are looking to cash NBA paychecks someday. In fact, NBADraft.net has Russell Westbrook going eighth, Kevin Love 16th, Darren Collison 17th, Richard Mbah a Moute 39th and Josh Shipp 44th.

5. Arizona -- Thanks to Luke Olson's way of recruiting, Arizona seems to always have NBA talent. And like last year, it comes as a surprise to consider the Wildcats as a title contender when they are on the bubble of even making the big dance. According the DraftExpress.com, Arizona has the third overall pick playing for them right now. Jerryd Bayless has seen his stock rise recently and is now projected as a lottery pick. Chase Budinger could be drafted in the top 10 and Jordan Hill could go in the top 10 next year.

6. Kansas State -- Michael Beasley could single handedly lead this team to a title. Beasley is projected as next year's No. 1 overall while Bill Walker could be a first round pick in June.

7. Texas -- Don't overlook the Longhorns title shot this season because they lost the No. 2 overall pick last year since Texas could have another lottery pick with D.J. Augustin. Not to mention they could send A.J. Abrams and Damion James to the pro's in '09.

8. USC -- The Trojans are trying to prove they aren't just a football program by recruiting professional level talent to play on the hardwood. O.J. Mayo, Taj Gibson and Davon Jefferson will play in the NBA.

9. Georgetown -- Roy Hibbert's draft status has dropped significantly with the quiet effort he's put together this season. Once considered a top three pick, Hibbert is written in as the No. 11th overall pick on DraftExpress. Regardless, the 7'2" swat artist will surely spend many a minute on an NBA floor. It's too bad he doesn't have swingman Jeff Green to help with this year's championship chase.

10. Duke -- Duke might not have the NBA ready team that UNC or UCLA possesses, but they could down the road. With no Blue Devil projected in the first two rounds of this upcoming draft, Duke might have to wait a year or two before the current roster can make it to the top of this list.

Other Teams to Watch:
Indiana -- Eric Gordon could be a top five pick and D.J. White will be an NBA baller.
California -- DeVon Hardin and Ryan Anderson are projected as first rounders.
UCONN -- Hasheem Thabeet has played well enough this season to get some looks from the NBA and should make for a top 20 pick (he's actually ahead of Hibbert on NBADraft.net right now). A.J. Price will be in the same position as Thabeet next season.
Stanford -- Brook and Robin Lopez both hope to use their 7-foot frames to make it to the NBA, but before they do they could lead the Cardinal on a serious tourney run.
Tennessee -- Tyler Smith could be taken in the first round this year, the Vols are full of talent and pro potential.

PGA Preview: Arnold Palmer Invitational (3/11/08)

The Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard is the next stop on the PGA Tour. Palmer's own Bay Hill Club course is a long course with tough greens. And this year the greens are even tougher. Grounds crew have had to work around the clock combatting the courses nematodes problem (nematodes are pretty much tiny worms that eat away at the grass). Although all of the greens that were damaged are being repaired and treated, there will still be patches of brown on some of the courses dance floors.

For the second year in a row, Tiger will enter the API boasting a bold winning streak. Last year, Woods played this event riding a seven stroke-play win streak and this year Woods enters having won his last five and seven of his last eight overall. But I think it's time for a new champ. Here is a list of 10 players that can put a stop to Tiger's streak this weekend.

1. Phil Mickelson -- Mickelson tees up for the first time since the WGC. Lefty has finished T6th, 2nd and 1st so far in 2008. We all know what a final pairing of Tiger/Phil would do to Sunday's ratings.

2. Vijay Singh -- Singh also tees up for the first time since the WGC in one of his favorite events on one of his favorite courses. Since 1993, Singh has finished in the top 10 six times and out of the top 25 only twice at the API. But don't ask him about the 18th.

3. Jim Furyk -- Furyk is floating around the top 25 in each event he's played so far this season. If you need accuracy from the big head, which this event requires, Furyk consistently delivers. Furyk ranks ninth on tour in driving accuracy percentage (74.51) which should give him a good chance at taming Tiger.

4. Sergio Garcia -- In his first 16 drives this year, Garcia has put the ball far enough to rank 10th on tour in distance. If Garcia doesn't let his putter take him out of it, I imagine we'll be seeing Garcia on the top of the leaderboard.

5. Bubba Watson -- Watson can kill it off the tee (312 yards per drive, best on tour), and it helped him to nine top 25 finishes in '07. If Watson can find the green and get the putter going, his drive could carry him this weekend.

6. J. B. Holmes -- After missing the cut at the PODS, it's hard to consider Holmes as a contender against Tiger. But on a long course with XL par 4's, Holmes ranks second on tour in driving distance, putting pressure on Woods is something Holmes isn't afraid of doing.

7. Luke Donald -- In the two events he's participated in on the PGA tour this season (discounting the WGC where he finished tied for 17th), Donald has tied for third and finished second. Next up for Donald is a victory.

8. Stuart Appleby -- With the entire field falling in Sunday's round at the PODS, Appleby found his way into the top 10. Meaning, Appleby has put up 5/5 in top 10 finishes to start '08.

9. Ryuji Imada -- Ninth on the money list, already has two second place finishes and a T5th (in just six events) to go along with the fact that Imada is third on tour in scrambling. It's anytime now before Imada gets a win.

10. John Senden -- After starting with an MC at the Sony Open in early January, Senden hasn't missed a cut since. His 67 on Sunday at the PODS boosted him into that two under tie for second.

One player I didn't mention but don't want you to forget about is Ian Poulter. Poulter said in a recent United Kingdom issue of Golf World that "it will just be me and Tiger" soon enough. The Arnold Palmer Invitational will be the first event that Poulter and Woods are playing together since the magazine was published.

CheChe23's NBA Power Rankings (March 5, 2008)

With all the focus on the Western Conference playoff race, it's easy to forget about the Eastern Conference. There are clearly two teams above the rest, but six more are going to join them in the post season. And ironically, the race in the Eastern is just as interesting as the Wild West. Despite having records below .500, eight NBA cities (Washington, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Atlanta, Indiana, Chicago, Milwaukee and even Charlotte) are all looking to cheer their teams into the playoffs. Orlando is rising, Dallas is dropping and the NBA's last team remains the same. But if you wanted me to move Houston or Golden State into the top 10, better luck next week. It's so much fun when every win counts, here my NBA Power Rankings for the first week of March.

BIGGEST RISE: Philadelphia 76ers from 20th to 16th.
BIGGEST FALL: Dallas Mavericks from 4th to 8th.

(Editor's note: "LW" indicates each team's ranking from CheChe23's previous week. —DC)

CheChe23's Power Rankings: March 5, 2008
TEAM RK (LW) W-L COMMENT
1 (1) 43-18 Los Angeles slipped-up on Friday and lost to Portland by eight, but outlasting Dallas on Sunday keeps Kobe the ahead of Duncan -- for now. Truth is, I had San Antonio first, at first until I watched Gasol, Odom and Bryant blast the Kings 36-18 in the fourth quarter thanks to 17 points from Kobe on their way to an easy victory. With San Antonio hot on the Lakers heels, L.A. could really use Andrew Bynum back who won't be ready to return until early April.
2 (2) 42-17 I'm not ready to give over the No. 1 ranking to the Spurs just yet. The Spurs are 29-9 with the Big Three all in the line-up, but I still favor the flavor of the month big three: Kobe, Odom and Gasol. In order to rank the Spurs second have to ignore several things, including the fact that they are 14-1 in the last 15 games (Kobe just makes it so easy to ignore them though).
3 (4) 46-12 Boston plays Detroit tonight in a battle to settle the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics don't need Sam Cassell to beat the Pistons tonight at home (Boston is 26-4 at home), they just need a healthy dose of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. The Boston Three Party is averaging 57.7 points, 19.4 rebounds and 11.5 assists per game.
4 (3) 43-16 Detroit would love to catch up ground on Boston in the Eastern Conference hunt for home court when it comes down to the Eastern Conference Championship series. If Detroit wants to beat Boston they'll have to play almost perfect, it should be playoff-type basketball for the first time in the East this season.
5 (7) 39-22 I didn't mean to disrespect the Jazz in my "Wild West" video blog by saying they didn't reach the WCF last season. I'm well aware of their success and couldn't be more of a supporter of D-Will. Deron Williams had 20 assists to put Utah past Dallas Monday which is why they get to move up a little this week. The Jazz would love to get into the top four in the west so they could have four games out of seven at home in the first round -- the Jazz are a league best 26-3 in Energy Solutions Arena.
6 (9) 39-23 Orlando has won five out of six and looks pretty determined to become the standout three seed in the Eastern Conference. Although, this team may have reached its peak. As good as Orlando's fierce forwards are, Jameer Nelson and Carlos Arroyo aren't exactly the one-two point guard punch you want in the post season.
7 (5) 40-20 This week the Suns play against Denver, Utah and San Antonio is what looks like a moving week for the West's top nine. The Suns beat the Blazers last night and Shaq had just six points, Nash had just four assists and the Suns didn't score 100 -- it's a new team.
8 (4) 39-22 The Mavs have lost three of the last four which drops them from fourth to eighth this week. Not to take away anything from the losses, but they were all to playoff teams on the road (@SA, @LAL, @UTA).
9 (8) 40-19 The month of March will be tough for the Hornets because for the rest of the month (13 games), New Orleans faces playoff teams. With the Western Conference being as fragile as fine china, the next three and a half weeks could be devastating if the Hornets falter.
10 (10) 32-25 Cleveland should remain on a winning track until they run into Orlando on Mar. 17th. Before the Battle for the Three seed, the Cavs play winnable games in six of their next seven. I kept the Cavs in the top 10 because LeBron James is too good to move down -- he's scored 20 or more since Dec. 14th (37 games) and did you see that recent dunk where his head is above the rim (I know, which one)?

OUTSIDE THE TOP 10:

11. Houston Rockets (37-20): Call me a Rocket-hater, but I'm just not buying this team. The best team that Houston beat in the 15-game win streak was New Orleans. Yea, they beat Denver and Golden State, but the rest of those wins were must wins against poor teams. Houston was ranked as high as third overall on some "experts" pre-season rankings. They've needed a franchise best win streak to even get into contention. The problem Houston will have for the rest of the season won't be the competition in the West, but the massive void left when Yao Ming went down.
12. Golden State Warriors (32-21): Golden State is on a win streak of their own, four in a row. But I'm still not buying the Warriors, either. As much as I love the Warriors speedy-quick point guard combo, there are too many question-marks on the big-man end for me to let them into the top 10 (even though in reality, both Houston and Golden State might have better squads than Cleveland).
13. Toronto Raptors (32-27): As the 26th ranked rebounding team in the NBA, Toronto didn't exactly get the rebounding boost they needed when the Rapshow recently had to replace Chris Bosh minutes with Kris Humphries. The Bosh-less Raptors can't afford to drop any games because after Monday's loss to Orlando they don't have the tie-breaker with the Magic for that valuable seeding in the playoffs.
14. Portland Trail Blazers (31-30): Portland will make its last effort to get into the playoff picture during the next week and a half. The Blazers are lucky this month to play: MIL, NY, MIN (2x), LAC (2x), SEA, CHA. In order to get into the playoff mix, Portland might need to win all the must-wins and even the other tough-games this month: CLE, SAC, PHO, WASH, GS.
15. Denver Nuggets (35-24): It puzzles me that the Nuggets struggle like they do. Maybe they should try playing defense. Or as good as it is for the player individually, maybe Iverson and Carmelo scoring so many points per game isn't good for the team. They must just think they aren't getting a title this year. But in the end it will be up to A.I. and Melo, the No. 3 and No. 4 scorers in the NBA, to carry Denver into the playoffs -- as it stands today they wouldn't be included.
16. Philadelphia 76ers (28-33): I was really close to moving this team ahead of Denver, but regardless they make the biggest move in this weeks rankings. After beating the Suns Saturday, Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala might have secured their spot in the post-season.
17. Sacramento Kings (27-32): The Kings love what Bibby-replacer Beno Udrih has been able to do recently (see: HOT HOT HOT). Sactown is the only NBA team that hasn't won against their own division.
18. Chicago Bulls (24-36): Between now and next Wednesday we will have a good idea of what the new-look Bulls can do against the Eastern Conference's best. Chicago plays Cleveland on Thursday, Boston on Friday and Detroit on Sunday.
19. Atlanta Hawks (24-34): The Hawks have lost 10 of their last 13. Understandably, Atlanta is trying to get comfortable with Mike Bibby as the leader. It's just that Atlanta doesn't have much time to waste because they currently sit one game back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.
20. Washington Wizards (29-30): The way that Washington has been able to get along without Arenas and now Butler makes you think believe the would be a legit contender for the East crown if they had stayed healthy all season.
21. New Jersey Nets (26-33): Devin Harris made his debut for the Nets on Friday after missing 15 games from an ankle injury. His first two games with New Jersey, Harris posted 21 points.
22. Indiana Pacers (24-36): Mike Dunleavy has almost been good enough for the HOT list, his last two games he's scored 36 points.
23. Milwaukee Bucks (22-38): Milwaukee as a city needs it's basketball team, now that football is dead in Wisconsin. Maybe the state's next Favre can be Yi Jianlian.
24. Charlotte Bobcats (21-39): After winning once in February, Charlotte has already netted two wins in March. The playoffs are still a possibility for the Bobcats.
25. Los Angeles Clippers (19-35): Say goodbye to the Sam Cassell era. Cassell already reminds me of Gollum, but even if you don't want to admit he looks like Gollum, didn't he act like the Celtics were his "precious"?
26. Seattle Sonics (16-44): Seattle Spoilers almost downed the Pistons last night, the make-shift Soincs are playing well enough to scare teams when they see them on the schedule.
27. New York Knicks (17-39): YouTube "Zach Randolph is not a point guard" -- it proves it.
28. Minnesota Timberwolves (12-43): I like Jefferson, I like Gomes, I even like Telfair -- I'm just questionable on the rest of the roster.
29. Miami Heat (10-44): Wade's averaging the fifth most points per game in the NBA, but all his work is taking a toll on his body and not getting them anywhere.
30. Memphis Grizzlies (14-43): Nine losses in a row...

HOT HOT HOT

1. Andre Miller -- Miller only had 8 points Monday, but prior to that he was on a 20+ streak in 4/5. Miller has played through trade rumors all season and with the deadline behind him, it looks like he's comfortable leading the 76ers on a playoff run. Since the ASG, Miller has averaged 7.8 assists per game.
2. Beno Udrih -- Mike Bibby, who? Udrih is blossoming as the go-to point guard for an up-and-coming Kings squad. Last week, Udrih had a string of stat-filling games scoring 25, 25 and 23.
3. Mickael Pietrus -- Last night's 19 points and 12 rebounds made me have to include Pietrus on the HOT list. Pieturs scored 23 points on Friday on a 7/7 shooting night from the floor and 6/7 from the free throw line. When the Warriors need the bench to bail them out, Pietrus steps up huge.

NOT NOT NOT

1. Chris Kaman -- Since a November and December of 18.0 points and nearly 14.0 rebounds per game, Kaman's production dropped this past month to 11.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg. It's hard to say when, if at all, that Kaman will return to his early season MVP-type form -- but the Clippers sure miss it.
2. Andrei Kirilenko -- After taking a flagrant foul from Dirk Nowitzki on Monday, AK47 is day-to-day. Kirilenko hasn't played great lately so maybe the hack will shake him up. Three or four rebounds a night is what the Jazz want from Paul Milsap and Kirilenko can't afford to go back-to-back games without recording a block. If Utah wants to remain in the same breath as San Antonio and Los Angeles come playoff time, Utah will need a better effort from one of their big guns.
3. Anderson Varejao -- In the first four games back from missing time, Varejao hasn't been stellar. Chipping in a couple of field goals is fine when you are playing off the bench and when Big Z isn't hurt. Varejao needs to get a haircut and up his scoring average to around 10.0 per game.
