I can't wait for the NFL season. Sunday's on ProTrade get a bit boring during the baseball season, but during football season, there is money to be made. I was reading an article this morning about fantasy Quarterbacks and I thought that I would review what 2006 gave us and give you my own outlook for 2007.
2006 ALL FANTASY TEAM WITH 2007 OUTLOOK!
QB - PEYTON MANNING
Manning is the best fantasy quarterback by far. When he is able to throw to options like Harrison and Wayne, it makes him the only fantasy quarterback to take in the first round of any draft. Manning didn't have a typical "Peyton" year in 2006 (aka record type numbers), but his 4,000 yards and 30 + TDs were good enough to make him the #1 fantasy passer.
2007 Outlook: Peyton has shed the Dan Marino comparisons and will now start working on his 'best ever' title. Don't expect Manning to slow down after the Super Bowl win. I think he could manage to find his way into the top 5 of this years fantasy draft - maybe as high as #2 overall.
RB - LADAINIAN TOMLINSON
After rushing and receiving for an NFL record number of touchdowns in '06, LT had the best fantasy season in the history of fantasy football. His numbers were unreal, but his ability to carry a fantasy squad make him a run-away #1 fantasy pick this upcoming draft and last years clear Fantasy MVP.
2007 Outlook: After rushing for a record number of touchdowns last year, it can only be downhill from here, right? I expect LT to see the best from every defensive coordinators each week and this might make his fantasy value take a hit. If the Chargers defense can play as well in 2007 as they did in 2006, LT might be on the field a lot. The worst case scenario is almost better than any other running backs best case scenario.
RB - BRIAN WESTBROOK Well, statistically, Larry Johnson should be at this spot, but Westbrook had a career year. His 600 + receiving yards make him a scary threat out of the backfield. Owners of Westbrook got him in the 4th round or even later. Yea - you could put LJ and LT in these spots, but LJ and LT were the #1 and #2 players taken, they SHOULD be here. Westbrook, on the other hand, deserves first team all-fantasy status.
2007 Outlook: In '06 Westbrook was the Eagles offense. During the first few weeks of the season McNabb was on pace to take the NFL's MVP before taking the bench for the rest of the year with an injury. Even after McNabb went down, Westbrook was able to carry the Eagles into the playoffs. His ability to catch and run while playing for a great offense will help Westbrook again this year.
WR - MARVIN HARRISON Harrison is consistent. It took a while for the Colts WRs to get started last season (no touchdowns through the first three games), but both Harrison and Wayne land on the all-fantasy team for their body of work throughout the entire year. Take your pick, Wayne or Harrison - they both happen to be on the same field, and they both happen to be the best fantasy receivers available. Although you could make a case for TO or Torry Holt, both Harrison and Wayne eclipsed 1200 + yards on the year, they should be recognized as the top WRs in fantasy.
2007 Outlook: It might be time for a changing of the guard in Indy. Harrison probably won't slow down, but Wayne should get just as many if not more looks than Harrison this season. Harrison is on pace to contend with Jerry Rice's all-time records, something unthinkable. Then again, it does help to have the best passer in the game throwing darts 50-yards downfield. Harrison will not disappoint in 2007.
WR - REGGIE WAYNE Reggie Wayne could be a number one on any team in the league. He is the 'two' in the 'one-two' punch that is the Colts passing game. Getting the ball to multiple receivers is something Manning is glorious at, and Wayne benefits.
2007 Outlook: Even though he'll slip past the popular wideouts like Chad Johnson, Steve Smith and Terrell Owens - Reggie Wayne could be the first receiver taken off the board. His talent level is up there with Johnson, Smith and teammate Harrison. Manning will throw 30 touchdowns in 2007 and at least 10 will go to Wayne.
WR - TERRELL OWENS Terrell Owens may have led the league in drops this year, but he also led it in TDs. In Big D, the 'D' could have stood for drama. Owens had some issues, but also caught his share of balls. It was a big question on fantasy draft night last year - which Owens would owners get? Ask most how it went and they'll tell you that they were pleased.
2007 Outlook: Things are going to be different in T.O.'s second year in Dallas. I think that he will be fine with the new coach and will take a mature approach to this season. His relationship with Tony Romo will only improve and he could become a solid, point producing 3rd round wide-out.
TE - MARQUES COLSTON Fantasy owners who used the waiver wire to grab on Colston were definitely given the "pick-up of the year" award. The fact that Colston was allowed at the tight end position is absurd. His numbers were outstanding even after taking a few games to heal from a heal injury. He was the best tight end by far in '06, outscoring most receivers. Colston should be selected ahead of Gates next season.
2007 Outlook: Nobody thought that Colston would beat out Gates, Shockey and Gonzalez to finish on the first team All-Fantasy at seasons end. Next year, Colston could struggle as he sees less line-backers and more defensive backs in coverage. Tight ends score points in fantasy, don't overlook Colston on draft day.
