The more that I hear about the point shaving scandal, the more I can't wait for the movie about it to come out. I love sports movies, especially ones based on real life, or movies about sports that could happen. This recent scandal got me thinking about great sports movies.
The best sports movies that are ones that are actually about sports. The movies that trick you into believing that they are about sports, but end up being about some off the court drama are annoying (like Whoopi Goldberg's "Eddie"). The sports movies that keep my interest have to do with drama, but the drama is sports related.
Obviously the movies that everyone loves are Caddyshack, Rocky, Bull Durham, Hoosiers and Slapshot.
Here are some of my 5 favorite sports movies:
5. The Fan (1996) If you haven't seen this movie, you should rent it tonight. It's the most scared you'll ever be from watching a sports related movie. Robert De Niro plays a crazy lunatic fan who does whatever it takes to get close with the star player Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes). This movie is creepy, but it's about sports -- De Niro's character represents the most die hard sports fan out there. He's in love with his squad and basically skews reality because of his passion for the team.
4. Two for the Money (2005) Two for the Money is fairly new, but its a pretty entertaining movie. I'm a big Al Pacino fan, so it's easy for me to like this movie. If you wager on sports, you should rent this movie. I like this movie because I like making predictions on games, and I imagine what it would be like to be Brandon Lang.
3. Happy Gilmore (1996) You can't go a round of golf anymore without someone in your group quoting a line from Happy Gilmore. I love this movie so much, I wrote my college senior paper on it. Who doesn't wish they were able to hit the long ball 400 yards, wear a hockey jersey on tour and have a Subway Subs for life card?
2. The Program (1993) This is the best college football movie ever made. When the leaves start to change, I love watching this movie to pump myself up for the upcoming college football season. The Program covers it all -- recruiting, injuries, steroids, suspensions, rehab, rape, cheating, heisman hype, bowl games and is "the ultimate story of what they must do to fight the pressure, face the pain and survive intercollegiate football."
1. Blue Chips (1994) Blue Chips could top the list of my favorite movies. It's a classic for multiple reasons. There are cammios by Bobby Knight, Rick Pitino, Dicky Vital and Larry Bird not to mention Penny Hardaway, Shaq, Bobby Hurley and Clearence Weatherspoon. This movie is the college basketball version of "The Program". Pete "God Damnit" Bell tries to get the Western Dolphins back on top after a sub-.500 season. Pete Bell illegally recruits the best players in the nation, including Shaq's character Neon Bodo. This movie has a lot of basketball action. It's a classic.
