The best of the best are taking this weekend to rest and prep for the upcoming British Open (Starts July 19th) - Zach Johnson ranks as the top golfer in the field.
With Zach Johnson being the sexy pick this week, finding the diamond in the rough could vault your John Deere Classic challenge portfolio to the top. The diamond this week could be more like a toothpick in a field that is like a haystack.
Last weekend I said that Jim Furyk, K.J. Choi and Anthony Kim would be at the top of the leaderboard. The only one who wasn't was Kim - but he wasn't far off.
Want consistency? Buy Anthony Kim. He's bound to make the cut (14/18) and he's bound to be in the top once it's all said and done (3 straight finishes tied for 25th or better). I also mentioned Camilo Villegas in my post last week - I still think that he has potential to break out this weekend. Lucas Glover flirted with the leaderboard at the Buick Open and has been close in his past two tournaments (T10 and T12). Glover could take advantage of this weak field and rise to the top.
The John Deere Classic is played at the TPC Deere Run - a par 71 played in Silvis, Illinois (which appears to have clear skies this weekend). The TPC Deere Run features tree-lined fairways, several dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views of the Rock River. The JDC gave Michelle Wie her first sponsors exemption to play in the 2005 event, she withdrew after 9 holes on Friday citing heat exhaustion.
I'm avoiding Senden just like RotoWire's Greg Vara. Vara writes "He's the defending champ this week, which might be what he needs to snap out of a recent funk, but it won't be enough. Senden has been off his game since an early runner-up finish. Only one Top-25 since that runner-up finish in March."
Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson are the only players that have clinched a spot in the Top 30. This weekend there are 60 players in the field who would move into the Top 30 with a win and 21 players who would move into the Top 30 with a 2nd place finish. After a win last weekend, K.J. Choi moved from 11th to 4th in the standings. When every point counts toward the FedEx Cup standings - who said there would be a lull this weekend? It should be a great tournament.
